QB Baby Carrier of the Week: Spotlight on Scootababy

24 Feb

This weeks, QB chats with Audra Meng, owner and designer of the Scootababy. Check out the latest additions to the Scootababy lineup — continuing in the tradition of naming patterns after major cities, and going Down Under for inspiration, meet Sydney and Wellington!

1.  What inspired you to begin making baby carriers?

My oldest wanted to be held constantly, so baby carriers were a necessity for me.  We used and loved many different types of carriers, but as my son got bigger, what I really wanted was a super quick way to carry him comfortably.  I searched everywhere and couldn’t find the carrier that I wanted — this led to designing the Scootababy.

2.  How long have you been in business?

Our first year was spent designing and optimizing the Scootababy carrier.  I made lots of prototypes… my husband and sons gamely tested them.  We launched the first Scootababy product in the fall of 2007, and have been in business for almost four years now.

3.  Where is your business located?

We are located in the California Bay Area, in Silicon Valley, which is an exciting place to live and work.  We also work with wonderful contractors and suppliers located around the United States.

4.  Where and by whom are your carriers made?

Our original Scootababy line continues to be made by the same sewing contractor whom we started with over three years ago.  We have visited their production facility in the Midwest, and can certify that each carrier they produce is made with care and integrity.  We are very fortunate to work with them.

5.  How has your business progressed over the years?

Scootababy has been growing steadily, and it’s interesting to see how the focus of the business changes over time — from product development to sourcing to marketing.  With a small business, you get a chance to see all the different facets.

6.  What business practice(s) do you employ that sets you apart from other companies?

Running our business with integrity is most important to us, and we strive to provide good service for our retailers and customers.  I think any responsible company would do the same.

7.  What is your favorite part of your job?

It’s awesome to receive letters from happy Scootababy users!  Knowing that a family is getting good use from their carrier, and that our product is helping to make their lives a little easier — that’s a very satisfying feeling.  I also enjoy interacting with all the people who make Scootababy possible — our retailers, contractors, and suppliers.

8.  Tell us a little about your family.

My husband Jack and I met in college, and will be celebrating our 17th wedding anniversary this year.  We have two high energy boys, ages 7 and 4.  We homeschool, and I do my best to keep up with the kids!

9.  How do you balance your work and family life?  Do you have any advice for busy parents?

It’s a constant challenge to balance work and family life.  What helps me is trying to stay as organized as possible.  And keeping everything in perspective and prioritizing accordingly.

10.  Do you have a favorite carrier that you designed that you have kept for yourself?

I’ve kept the original prototype that first sparked the idea for Scootababy.  It has since been stored away now that my youngest has grown too big to carry.
